Hola:

Hope you are beginning to adjust to the new format that LinkedIn surprised us with a few weeks ago. Why do I hate change so much! Guess I am getting like my father. Oh, well. I am sure after a while I will be back to normal, but for now I don’t appreciate the changes. I know you are probably saying, “Quit complaining and get on with the tips; I’ve got work to do.” You are right; so here goes Week 45 tips right at you!

Profile Tips

People are always misspelling my last name. I do know why. It’s the “I before E except after C” thing that we learned in grade school. To address this issue, I placed my misspelled last name (“Brietbarth” vs “Breitbarth”) in my Specialties section, following an entry that says “KEYWORDS:” Then if someone searches my name with this misspelling, my profile comes up perfectly. You should think about words that are important to you that are in this category of “frequently misspelled.” It could be not only proper names but product brand names, processes, addresses, clubs, groups and associations.

Connection Tips

I have been reading about research from some of the national “gurus” on LinkedIn, and they are consistently saying that an email sent through LinkedIn has a higher open rate than traditional emails. I don’t have any research or results of my own to verify this, but I am pretty sure they are referring to a “cold call” email and not an email to a person you are already connected to and have been conversing with through regular email for some time.

The more I think about it, I guess that would make sense since it would come with anticipation that you may be receiving information from an already friendly source since it has “LinkedIn” in the subject line on the email. What this does for you is at least gives you another avenue to try to communicate with a person who you have no previous connection with but at least have the “relationship” of being connected on LinkedIn in some way, usually through a group relationship.
